As we all know, the concept of legal age of consent varies across countries and history. What we consider an anathema now wasn't and indeed isn't the case in the past and elsewhere respectively. Child protection and safeguarding legislates against four areas of sexual, emotional, physical abuse plus neglect of anyone under the age of 18.

The point about Rolf Harris is that he allegedly performed actions contrary to the law at the time, for which he has and may still be prosecuted and punished. That was his choice.

For the sake of devil's advocate argument, if the legal age of consent was, say, 12, would you all be up in arms now?

But it is elsewhere and was here. The question I'm asking is whether our moral outrage is based upon an arbitrary set of "laws". The gender and age for permission to vote on such matters has changed enormously over the last century. The homosexual age of consent has dropped from totally illegal to 21 to 18, for no real medical reason. Over the centuries, "incest" has been redefined in terms of genetic proximity.

It is possible that advances in medicine have demonstrated the dangers in accepting sexual activity taking place below certain ages. But it is possible, just possible that the desire to restrict population growth has also been an added factor.

Sorry to be so blunt, and sorry if this causes indignation and outrage. I'm just trying to consider the bigger picture

Who defines morally acceptable? That is the question.

Why do you doubt it would have had an effect. Are you suggesting that a twelve year old would welcome his sexual attentions?
