Re: The new passports (Post-Brexit)

Morning everyone, just reading that our post-Brexit passports are to be made by a Franco-Dutch firm Gemalto, after they outbid our British firm, De La Rue, by undercutting them in the bid by £50million.

According to Theresa May, a fair competition to deliver a high quality and secure product which offers the best value for money for customers was her priority. However, listening to the Chairman of De La Rue this morning, he said that by cheaper it could mean an inferior quality of product and cheaper is not always the best solution. He went on to say that It is also a very sad state of affairs that the British government does not support British business and that the people of Gateshead will be very worried about this decision. He also said that because of the Government's decision, the company has had to put out a profit warning.

Nice one Theresa! NOT!

Do you believe that the contract should have been awarded to a British company to show our intent, or has TM capitulated on the quiet and gone for bargain basement appeasement towards the EU, rather than jobs, security and quality for our own?

Re: The new passports (Post-Brexit)

I am not happy that so many contracts go to foreign countries but I would imagine that there are certain EU rules in place which we have to adhere to until we officially leave. All the more reason for leaving the European thieving scumbags I say.

Listening to the Today programme, it has not yet been finally decided to whom the contract will be awarded for providing passports .
There is a tender for cost but that is not the whole story, other factors will be taken into consideration (eg security) . We will see

It would not be normal process to release information on a tender process unless the winning bid has been decided. The bidders would not be informed if a decision has not been made.

To be fair I don't believe there was a choice, while we remain in eu we have to accept this. If we were free of them we could chose a uk company. I want to blame Teresa may but on this occasion it's not her fault.

Re: The new passports (Post-Brexit)

Anyway de la rue have issued profit warnings in the past and the favoured bidder is larger and has digital expertise. De la rue is focused on printing. So there is more to this and British companies should look at their ability to adapt in a changing economic and technical climate.

Hi

Yet another misconception of EU Rules.

We have to advertise the Contract, in exactly the same way we would have to do with Japan, South Korea, Canada etc.

There is a 100% get out clause, National Security.

Passports are a National Security issue, so if we award it abroad it is entirely down to our Politicians.

It is naff all to do with leaving the EU.
