I agree. It is often advised to accept (and deal with) your situation ..... and move on with it. Some things are just to heartbreaking to dwell upon, again, and again, and again. I didn't express that very well, but I know you understand what I mean.

The worst thing is when you see shows where the family goes to a GP and gets help almost straight away then a lovely social worker and helpful specialist jump into the mix and they all get the support they need.

Not the bit about a doctor that tells you its your fault and youre just a helicopter mum, not the bit about the school telling you maybe if you didnt work ( he was 14) and were there for your son he wouldnt be a screwup, not the bit where a specialist tells you live with it or a social worker tells you your case falls outside their remit..

Not the bit where a family is so desperate they threaten to take the local authority to court unless something is done..

Admittledly not all of them are like this but most are, and make my guts churn...

I did not see it. But I have seen some things. My God daughter has an autistic son. When I was at her parent`s 40th wedding anniversary Jack was playing with all the young grandchildren. Joyce said `Steph god willing I will see all my grandchildren grow up,but Jack never will`

Cass. Cass. Cass. We could sit down together and speak the whole afternoon ... and right into the wee hours. I swear, some people get their education from day-time, television soap operas and pass it off as "insight". They do so much damage it makes one weep.

Re: The A Word

I suppose my family are deemed to be one of the lucky ones having help all along the way.
I feel for those who aren't helped to "deal" with this.

Re: The A Word

This is a drama not a documentary and there will therefore be a bit of dramatic licence but I thought it was very well done and highlighted the parents struggle to accept that their son might need help and the immediate aftermath of a diagnosis.

It may not be what every parent or grandparent of a child with autism wants to watch but if it raises the awareness of ordinary folk, who might watch a drama but not a documentary, about autistic spectrum disorders and the problems and issues that come with them then I'm all in favour.

Raising awareness yes, that is good. And sometimes issues can be dealt with sensitively and with great insight in soaps and dramas.
What I cannot forgive is when some kinds of disability is used in comedy such as Derek.
