Re: Heating

I like it cool at night, usually having the window open unless it is well below zero. My husband likes it warm, good job we have separate bedrooms.

I don’t hold with just using ch for a few hours a day.
It’s a waste of money according to some experts .

All I need is a cardigan round my shoulders if I’m sitting watching tv otherwise I’m warm enough .
I have my timed heating set at 17 degrees. I use one large radiator in the sitting room and the towel rail in the bathroom. The radiators in the two bedrooms are off. If I am cold, then I sit with a rug over my knees. Currently, I pay £20 a month for both gas and electric, thanks to the WFA which I transferred to my supplier the day I got it. My account remains in credit.

Re: Heating

I wouldn't be comfortable at 17 even if we had not had such severe cold weather as we're experiencing at the moment .
Everyone is different in what they feel they need but according to Age Concern17 is too low for the older generation to feel comfortable in and courtesy of Mumsnet . A temp of 17c is OK for bedrooms, but downstairs (living room) needs to be at least 18-19c and if you have young children or elderly then 21c.

Re: Heating

I am 79 and 17 is fine for me, I wear layers and socks and shoes (never slippers). During the recent cold spell I kept it at 17 until about 9 p.m, - I go to bed at 11 p.m and take a hot water bottle.

Re: Heating

We have our heating at about 17C/18C during the winter and spring. It is usually switched off in April until September at the earliest.

Re: Heating

Mine is set to go off at 9 pm and on at 5. I sometimes switch it off manually for some hours in the middle of the day as the thermostat doesn't work.

Re: Heating

We keep our heating at 21ºC in this cold weather, at 10.00pm the temperature is lowered and it's left on low all night. The bedroom radiator is always switched off.

Re: Heating

A reputable heating engineer told me to leave thermo at 17 when I went on a couple of weeks holiday during winter months, so that if the temperature ever dropped to that the heating would come on and keep my rooms aired.
I've tended to follow his advice . Nothing worse than coming back from a warm climate abroad to a freezing cold home .
