An age-old problem I think and a friend once told me Crown paint shops told him years ago that the trick is a gloss undercoat (oil based) and then water based gloss on top.

The problem is that oil-based Gloss is tougher the water-based Gloss so by using an oil-based undercoat you are providing the protection but you won't get that high-gloss sheen with water-based paints.

Apparently white gloss painted surfaces go to yellow quicker in low-light conditions too! stevmk2

Its the oil in the paint that causes the yellowing affect
On new unpainted doors I may agree about using it as an undercoat
But on already painted doors not necessary ........
