Then in 1066, the date that every schoolboy (and girl) used to know, the normans (more norsemen) came and conquered the land. Again, intermarriage.

So in a way, we are a mongrel nation but for the past thousand years we have become one nation and, despite different origins, have become one people.

Since then, we have been visited by all sorts of odds and sods, but only in relatively small numbers, none who have made any great changes to our country, and certainly nothing to its detriment.

As you quite rightly say, muddy, the present level of immigration is unprecedented in its numbers. Worse than that, many are causing all sorts of trouble and, in common with those of a certain religion who came here in numbers since the second world war, are demanding that we change to suit them.

The last 'immigrants' who made such demands, and succeeded, were the normans, although they did this by right of conquest.

What we are seeing now is not exactly a conquest, but is just as frightening and, assuming we allow it to continue, could be just as consequential. Our future new rulers?

We are a nation of immigrants but that doesn't mean we can have unlimited immigration. With the housing problems we have we'd be daft to keep letting everyone in.

Immigration in my family started way back in 1700s, and has carried on right up to modern day. Started by slavery in the colonies and ended with asylum for oppressed minority.

And that Julie has long been my interpretation of the immigration policies of this and other EU countries. Nothing less than modern day slavery !
We need migrants apparently to do all the low paid jobs and the dirty work, that we in this country won't do ??
Because we are in the EU we can choose where our workers come from to do the low paid jobs and dirty work and that's ok. !
Those who come from outside for the low paid jobs are not welcome !

How many different standards do we need ? It's cheap labour which in turn has kept our wages down so the divide between rich and poor has grown.
Another Brownie point for Blair.

Really?

Of the usually resident population in the UK, around 1 in 7 (14%) were born abroad and 1 in 11 (9%) had non-British nationality in 2016.

Doesn't sound like you have much of an immigrant population to me. Much ado about nothing.

Yes I agree, I'm afraid I see the eu as inherently racist, we are to welcome only Europeans, the idea a face might be black Africa is anathema to them.

And you being an Australian you would be the one to advise us Brits where our problems lie.

They don't have an immigration problem because they farm it out to tropical hellholes as in PNG .
Out of sight out of mind.

Actually we are not and never have been a nation of immigrants .
The present level of immigration is completely unprecedented.
Britain has always been a nation of incomers, and better for it, in my opinion.
