tdhe News is bad for us?

A recent "news item" suggests that news is bad for us because:

Misleads

is irrelevant

no explanatory power

is toxic to our body [I liked this one]

increases cognitive errors

inhibits thinking

works like a drug

wastes time[we must have a lot of time to waste here!]

makes us passive

kills creativity

READ ON - it's only news

I don't think it's bad for us. It's reality.

It's only bad if you are receptive.

I like to be aware of what's happening in the world but it does seem as though the news is all bad news recently.

Misleading yes...and if you watch news from different countries the vast difference in the way they report the same event shows that.

Addictive , can be you can get hooked on watching on the different news angles..

Bad for you if you get depressed by it or addicited same as time wasting..

Plus in a way if you become frustrated at the selective way your news is delivered and still watch you are wasting time.

Yes, as the industry exists primarily to make money.

They used to say where there's muck there's brass but now it's also where there's misery there's money to be made formatting and peddling "news" in a form that they know will get people buying.

I don't buy or read newspapers as it's all too depressing. stevmk2

Re: tdhe News is bad for us?

Really good book The News; A Users Manual by Alain de Botton.

He continues on the theme 'good news is no news' and stresses that stuff only gets in the news because it is out of the ordinary. Ordinary is usually good - e.g. planes don't crash, trains arrive on time, children play and are not abducted, families enjoy time together, millions holiday without terror - so the extraordinary (usually bad) is what the media seek

You'd have thought we would have realised this by now
