I have an American friend & we chat a lot on a message board. We have over the years got to know each others language differences. If I say lift, she knows I mean elevator, if she says trunk I know she's taking about her car boot. She calls her Mother Mom, but I say Mum. Just a few instances but there are more.

I have noticed the steady decline in traditional language.They have burglarize, conversate instead of converse, phat, sick and dope all mean cool or awesome in urban slang.
Your bae is your babe.
Your bro is your friend , buddy or depending on the tone used can be provocative.
The Tea means gossip.
Throwing shade is giving an insult.
Salty means angry or bitter.
Your squad are your group of friends
And so it goes on and on ........
I must admit if I was out and about in society today I would be wary of speaking in case I accidently offended someone.
