Re: English Language

The import I detest is 'Can I get...?' when ordering a coffee, or anything else.

I mutter 'No, can I have!' Arghhh.

But I agree about gotten, as I hate that too.

Oh good grief! It just isn't cricket! Languages change all the time, eventually we accept these abhorrations! (my spellchecker's turned off)
The word that gets right on my pickle is , "innit", hate it!

Re: English Language

Language changes tbh as long as the kids don't swear in my presence if they say gotten, innit or any other aberration I'm really very happy with it.

Julie, To be really authentic, you should be referring to the ladies as, 'gals'!

Nooo that would mean I thought of them as equals. Which I do but doesn't really suit a cleaner talking to those she's cleaning for. Ladies fits much better.

Re: English Language

I have an American friend & we chat a lot on a message board. We have over the years got to know each others language differences. If I say lift, she knows I mean elevator, if she says trunk I know she's taking about her car boot. She calls her Mother Mom, but I say Mum. Just a few instances but there are more.

Re: English Language

I have noticed the steady decline in traditional language.
They have burglarize, conversate instead of converse, phat, sick and dope all mean cool or awesome in urban slang.
Your bae is your babe.
Your bro is your friend , buddy or depending on the tone used can be provocative.
The Tea means gossip.
Throwing shade is giving an insult.
Salty means angry or bitter.
Your squad are your group of friends

And so it goes on and on ........

I must admit if I was out and about in society today I would be wary of speaking in case I accidently offended someone.

Re: English Language

Wonder how far back the term "ill gotten gains" goes.

Possibly Shakespeare?
