Take one (or two) 5mg valium (or a half bottle of Scotch), go into 'the tube', close your eyes and think of England.

In the real world it doesn't work like that Pum. My wife had to be pulled out of an MRI machine as she was on the verge of a major stroke, such is the seriousness of her claustrophobia. Luckily, the consultant has now found an "open" MRI she can try. If that doesn't work it will have to be a full anaesthetic.

Re: Has anyone here had an MRI scan

Ive had three,I also have asthma but the staff will give you pillows and make sure you are laying comfortable, also you are given a ' buzzer' to hold so you can call any time if you feel too bad. You will be sort of enclosed wit a ' roof' over you but you can see straight down out of the open end As said its best to close your eyes, breath as slowly and relaxing as you can and think nice thoughts, maybe have a little sleep. You will be offered earpieces I dont like anything on my ears , so had ear plugs. Yes it does get noisy but concentrating on the different sounds helps take your mind off whats happening. Try not to worry < I was terrified because I get claustrophobic in closed spaces but you will be surprised how easy it is. Best of Luck .

I have had several on my spine, you are in communication with the Techs via a mic and speaker in the machine if you are going to cough just say so. If you cough during a scan it will be blurred and they will redo it. The last one I had took nearly an hour because it was in two parts - they had to inject something into my blood to give better contrast for some pics. You are given a copy of the disk they send to the specialist on each occasion and while they are interesting to look at once they mean nothing to me

Personally I was quite happy in the machine but some people find it claustrophobic and as others have mentioned it is very noisy - if it weren't for the noise I could have had a snooze in there.

Some obese people don't fit at all.

That's all very well as long as you know who is in the team.

No music - - just the voice of the girl telling you when to hold your breath and (fortunately) when to breath again.

Good luck!
CAT (Computed Tomography - I looked that up) scans are just X-rays in a machine like a doughnut whereas MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging - I knew that one) uses magnets and radio waves to define muscle and soft tissue and is like a body length tunnel.

The last CAT Scan I had was used to place an injection of steroids and painkillers right next to my spinal column. They put the needle in, performed a CAT scan looked at the needle placement, moved it and repeated. Very uncomfortable.

Re: Has anyone here had an MRI scan

CAT = Computerised Axial Tomography

I find the history of radiography fascinating.

Tomography has been going for the best part of a century, although not 'computerised' of course!

Transverse Axial Tomography is, or was, an interesting procedure. I've never seen one in real life, but what happened (as least in one method) was for the patient to stand (or sit) on a turntable which would rotate him/her in a standing/sitting position. At the same time, a standard X-ray film in a cassette would also rotate at the opposite side of the patient to an X-ray tube.

This would produce an image of a cross-section of the body somewhat similar to that obtained with a CT scan.

I remember seeing a diagram of this system, which would have provided a far better description of my clumsy attempt! Unfortunately, I cannot find one on the internet, probably because that method of imaging has been long superseded by 'computerised axial tomography'.

I just thought I'd explain where the 'Axial' came from. That has now been dropped, of course, and the correct name is Computerised Tomography - CT, although the Yanks seem to like the term 'CAT scan', presumably as it's easier to say!

I've just had a look in an old (1970s) textbook and found the diagram I remembered. It's a bit late at night now, but in the unlikely event that anyone is interested(!), I can scan it and post it on here.

As I said, I find such historical medical procedures fascinating, and reading about them makes me realise how lucky we are that such a great deal of progress has been made, even during my relatively short lifetime!

She forgot to take off her metal underwired bra and she's stuck to the magnet.

Six members of staff are presently trying to pull her free...

and giving her a complimentary boob enlargement at the same time.
