I thought that PCSOs (plastic policepeople) were those who failed to qualify to become real policepeople.

Perhaps I'm wrong.

I'm sure - absolutely sure(!) - that someone will let me know.
Ah, right. My mistake.
I've never heard the term 'plastic policeperson' before, which accounts for my confusion!

No problem. Actually, joking apart, 'Plastic Policepeople' are no doubt an asset and provide numbers and 'eyes on the street'.

Nevertheless, I'd be happier if the stingy government would spend more money on the 'real thing'.

BTW, 'Boot' doesn't sound very ladylike, if you don't mind my saying so. Why not call yourself 'High-heeled Shoe' or 'Black Stockings' instead?

Yes it's very disappointing that armed forces or Police are given these powers and then punished for using them.

But the last thing police need is the added stress of carrying a gun and the PTSD after they use one. Most signed up to the job without expecting this. Most don't want it. There are specialist armed units and that's how it should remain IMO. It's just a kneejerk reaction to what happened.

I'm not sure that's true our pcso was a police constable for about 7 years, then left the country and went to Thailand for 20 odd years, on his return he was too old to go back into the force but still wanted to help the community. I wouldn't say he failed to become a police officer he just became a little old for the job.

OK, that makes sense.

I suppose it could be argued that, as he was too old for regular service, he didn't qualify as a 'real' policeman.

Experience is very important, of course, but physical fitness is also important in that sort of job.

All NSW Police are armed with a Glock automatic pistol, a tazer and capsicum spray I can't see the problem with arming police.

Hi

Bruce, life is different here in the UK.

Our Armed Police are subject to intense scrutiny and sadly the the people who do the scrutiny are far more involved with the so called Human Rights of the Criminal than the Enforcement Officers, be they Police, Military or anyone else.

They have split second decisions to make, not hours, days or months to review everything.

They need our support, not our criticism.

A Taser is naff all use against anyone wearing a stab vest, underneath which may be a suicide bomb.

They need our support, not criticism.

The platitudes and false praise of Corbyn and Abbot are the last thing we need, they are the first to criticise.

I have to say that after the murder of Jean Charles da Silva e de Menezes on the London Tube with no police ever being brought to justice I would be wary of arming your police too. British police possibly just don't have the culture to be armed.

Our police have always been armed (though the Victorian police used to have a reputation for shooting first and asking questions afterwards) and there are checks and balances in place if a gun is drawn. However it is not fool proof - A Queensland policeman was recently suspended for drawing a gun on a motorist who was slow to pull over and too many mentally ill people have been shot over the years in NSW but generally it works well.

The shooting of Charles Mendes was terrible and worse they tried to cover it up with lies . It's is this sort of behaviour that makes people wary of arming the police we don't want our country to be run by trigger happy brutes and bullies and there will always be some who are ,to put a lethal weapon in the hands of these is a frightening prospect .

Hi

An innocent man died.

Given all the info available, a decision was made, a very brave decision to kill in order to protect the Public.

A wrong call, but also a right one.

If he had been a terrorist bomber and the call had not been made and dozens had died there would have been even more criticism.

Enforcement Agencies just cannot win.

All kudos to Cressida Dick, she made the call on the information available, she did her job.

I quite agree that there are some who should never have a gun.

Luckily they are very few and far between.
