Re: An elected head of state???

Electing a Head of State could not help but make it a political process.

Who would select the candidates from whom voters could choose ?
Or do you envisage that anybody could nominate - and you'd end up with a cast of thousands.
First-past-the-post or preferential voting ?

A Head of State should be above Party Politics.
But you can bet in an election campaign to fill the office, parties would be in it up to their armpits.

There is also the likelihood that the candidate with the biggest 'war chest' would probably win.
A vast pit of money for radio/TV/Newspaper advertising plus signage, letterbox drops and all the rest.
Nahhhh - hardly the best way to get the best person for the job.

Who would we find that didn't have something in the past that they regret but which the media would have a field day exposing - Drug taking, wife beating, historical sex crimes, racism, tax evasion, expenses fraud, the list is endless, and if none of these apply they'll make something up - It's not a case of 'Innocent until proven guilty' but 'There's no smoke without fire'. The royal family have had problems in the past but have the power to deflect it.

Great ... I'd probably vote for that just for a laugh.

Something or someone radical is definitely needed

Sir Les Patterson might be pleasant.

How about us voting on what we've got before deciding on an alternative?

Oh yeah, you'd lose.

Long live The Queen.

Re: An elected head of state???

Like Joe, I think the monarchy is an outdated and slightly silly tradition. Having said that, unlike Joe, I don't believe that anyone really thinks that the Queen "rules" the country (or has any influence at all for that matter). Compared with the billions lost to the exchequer by tax evasion and avoidance by the rich, the royal family is a pretty cheap source of foreign income (via tourism). The monarchy are worth keeping just for the sake of tradition in my view. We have lost so much of our culture already, why throw away what has become a harmless and quite charming traditional institution. If the monarchy still had and exercised great power, I'd probably agree with Joe, but the reality is they don't and never will again.
