Problem changing gear

I have a Fiat Punto sporting. 2004
This lunchtime I went out to go to town but really struggled to get it into any gear. Lots of crunching of any gear I selected.
I managed to get to the shops driving in second and not changing gear as very short journey. After leaving it for an hour and a half got back to find the fault had disappeared and was fine for the rest of the afternoon.
Don't know what caused it but I had left the car unused for three days. Also it said in the manual that I should always start it with the clutch depressed which I do but I think I may have forgot at lunchtime when first starting it as I wasn't feeling very well.
Any suggestions please?

Re: Problem changing gear

It could be because you have left it stood for three days the clutch plate could have stuck, or the clutch itself is on its way out, check the clutch fluid reservoir level hasn’t dropped and let air in, ( assuming its hydraulic, and not cable operated) or it may be a nylon bush in the gear-lever selector, it could even be the gearbox selector fork broken or misaligned, or the gearbox itself, best to get it looked at if it persists.

Thank you for the advice.
Its a cable clutch but I will get it looked at. If its anything expensive I will loose the car as I've already had to take it in to have the exhaust looked at by Kwik Fit as it was blowing. They first told me it needed two sections replacing cost £450 but while showing me underneath the KW mechanic touched the flexible piece and it stopped blowing. They told me they had put some stuff where the pipe met the flexipiece and welded them and it sorted it out. Funnily enough the cable adjuster is right by the weld they did when I looked at the manual.
Hmmmmm.

I find Kwik fit a bit hit and miss, better to use a local garage that you trust or is recommended to you ,

Re: Problem changing gear

another tip, avoid Kwik Fit. Won,t say why but when I was working for BT I had to go into a couple of their places . Vowed never to have them touch any of my cars, not even for a tyre change afterwards.

Thanks I did wonder after being told I needed two sections replacing but it was repaired by welding an entirely different part of the system.
In the old days I would be able to look after problems myself but these days it's difficult to get down on the floor to look underneath and even more difficult to get back up again.

Re: Problem changing gear

This might sound stupid but did you have the handbrake on while you tried to put your car into gear? As cars get older the gear cog teeth flatten out and catch/jam causing crunching. Just a thought. When the car is moved slightly the gears "go in".

Re: Problem changing gear

As Primus,

Sounds like a clutch issue. Cables can stretch and lower the bite point - not fully disengage the clutch. How many miles on the car?

Re: Problem changing gear

Pump the clutch pedal.....as said it may be a stretched cable.
Pumping the pedal can take up the slack if it has an adjustor.
