I know that we don't want to believe it, but I think it will happen and i can see the start of it already. Remember all those Sci Fi films where computer screens are a human's lifeline and robots do all the work, well I think something similar will happen & maybe one day the robots will be advanced enough to take control!
It's a scarey thought about these robots but I believe people will become redundant to robots in the future. It's already happening in my workplace. Part of my job is to key in account numbers and send on via email to the next person/department to delete these accounts and while I thought it a human that would be doing that i.ve recently been informed it is done by robots which takes away jobs . The company I work for are talking of robots doing the work that humans are doing right now in the future and are working on it. So one day I will lose my job due to a robot!! What are people going to do? There are a shortage of jobs already so what about our future. I like technology but it's certainly not always s good thing.

I agree Lion Queen, back in the 80's big companies were making plans to reduce their staff numbers, and save money. That money was then used to buy better computers that could do some of the work that people used to do..... and that has continued!

1) Things not readily available in local shops - such as - replacements for my china dinner service. We no longer have a 'fine china' shop in the area so I had to search for a 'specialist' shop on-line when two of the soup plates were broken.

2) Flat packed furniture. Wanted a kitchen work station/trolley and one of those cabinets for storing shoes. Several shops had both - but would charge an extortionate delivery fee. Not owning or having access to a car I could not collect them myself - so resorted to Amazon. Found both - same make, cheaper price and free delivery !

3) Disinterested staff in shops. Nothing is more off putting - for me anyway - than sales staff who are unhelpful and unable or unwilling to answer questions about the goods they are selling. Most on-line places that I have dealt with have a Q&A section, some even have an on-line 'chat box' so you have an instant answer.

In the main I prefer 'real' shops - I like to see what I am buying - especially when it comes to fresh food - would never buy that on-line, have bought tinned/dry goods once - a long time ago when we had bad snow and I could not face the long walk to the shops. Clothing is something else I would not buy on-line - I like to feel fabrics and try things on.

Internet shopping is - for me - a convenient tool when in need. Not a regular replacement for real shops.
All those are true ST and I have personally been guilty of ordering online because I can't be bothered to go the shops but mostly it's because of the choice online.

Re: Has internet shopping gone too far?

Our Post office has just moved from the centre of the town (the best place for it) to inside a newsagents. Not only does this leave another empty building but there is no parking outside the newsagents.

I would have thought that the Post Office would be one of the winners with online ordering.

Re: Has internet shopping gone too far?

The days of "conmen" high street shops charging punters ridiculous prices and ripping them off are over and very rightly so.

Most offer absolutely no added value over and above the product itself being sold so there was never any reason whatsoever for them to charge the ridiculous prices they did.

What we are seeing is actually the end of that fraudulent monopoly. For years we were effectively forced to buy TVs and electrical equipment from the likes of Comet and Currys and whilst it was a luxury to walk around the shops to touch and feel the goods, that privilege never justified the vastly inflated price tags.

Same for many clothes shops. Crazy prices in shops vs far cheaper prices on the internet and yet the shops added very little extra value. The ability to try stuff on in fitting rooms perhaps, but then when ordering online you can try the clothes on in the comfort of your own home !!

I think it's right that the internet has removed baggage and unwanted/unnecessary costs of con man retail outlets. As humans we have to learn to stop ripping each other off as we have done in the past. There is no good future for us if we persist in this.

My exception to this situation concerns the many local food tracdes that we used to have. Proper butchers, greengrocers, artisan bakeries and so on. Those ARE important and we should see to it that they are brought back imo.

Food provenance is important and we should support such vital local trades.

Totally agree - fed up of being mugged by parking charges if going into town, rushing round like a pillock trying to get back to the car before the parking time expires knowing there's a member of the Gestapo ready to pounce with a parking ticket if you're so much as minute late, and shop assistants who don't know their arses from their elbows when asked about an item. PC World in particular - bits of kids bullshitting their way through describing something because we are classed as `oldies` and aren't supposed to know about such things and you know they haven't a clue what the hell they're on about.

And breathe........

We hardly ever have things we have ordered on-line delivered by the PO, it is usually by a courier.

Re: Has internet shopping gone too far?

Hi

Internet shopping has its' uses.

One of the wavemakers in my marine aquarium packed up Sunday night, noticed it Monday morning.

Ordered on line,arrived Tuesday morning.

It saved me a 55 mile round trip to get one.

Thats one thing our local councils have got right ( other then Belfast), cheap or free car parking in the towns

If the free car park is full then its 40p an hour and even the multi story connected to the shopping centre in the next town only charges £1 a day

Also private car parking companies have no jurisdiction here so its ok to park in supermarket car parks for as long as you like with no charge
