Help, can you help me to identify a small rodent?

My back door was open and I noticed, from my kitchen, that one of my cats chasing a brown furry thing about 2" long into my small back hall where I keep my lawnmower. I got a brief glimpse and, if I am honest, it looked like a fur covered large slug..... but it must have had legs to move so fast.
Needless to say in went under the mower which was parked outside my cellar door! I moved everything but can't find it, so I can only think it has got under the door and into the cellar.

It was torpedo shaped and from what I saw there was no obvious ears and I just can't identify it as any other creature we get in my garden.

Any ideas please.....because there is no way I am going back down that cellar till I know what it is

It sounds like a Caterpillar to me, they Brown Furry ones turn out to be Gothic Moths.

Sounds like a vole, shrews have very pointy noses and mice have distinct ears. Hope it escaped unharmed!

All rodents should be put down, the only good one is a dead one, imo.

Could it be a harvest mouse - tiny, brown, furry, moves very fast!
