That's funny, I almost made the same comparison in that people used to think it was ok to have slaves.

Several times I have witnessed horses collapsing in Egypt whilst carting tourists around and it's very upsetting.

Egpyt is a sad place for horses but it's not the only one a horse collapsed in NY only a couple of weeks back dragging tourists around the streets .

Maybe I'm being over sensitive but I don't understand why tourists think it is ok to be pulled around by a horse or sit on the back of a camel or an elephant.

Because they are ignorant .
I used to live in Belize which is very hot tropical and they started to cart tourists about with small horse and carts .

The carriages got bigger and bigger the horses were barely bigger than ponies . I had endless fruitless discussions about this but I will always remember some great overweight American woman getting off telling me don't give the driver a hard time he's given us such a good ride . I pointed to the exhausted panting animal bathed in sweat and said look at the ride you gave him . There were at least 9maybe more of the great crass boors in the carriage .
Some people have neither sense nor an awareness of other sentient beings .

Hi

We could of course just ban everything, which is what some want.

One could quite easily say that only people in the sport see the reality of the activity and those on the outside see only what they want to see.

As I said above, I have no real experience with horses, but I have, for 20+ years, been involved in sled dog racing. During that time I have occasionally been chided by animal rights nutters for the "cruelty" in making my poor dogs run in harness. In fact, the cruelty would be in not letting them run. To see their manic excitement when we get their harnesses out leaves no doubt whatever that they love to run.

Just look at their happy faces:

That was my son and daughter taking some of the dogs for a run around Gunnersbury Park in Chiswick in January 2010 (the last time we got any decent snow in London).
