Re: Emmerdale

Such a shame seeing Ashley's struggle with memory loss. I wonder if it is degenerative or if it can be treated?

Sad, nonetheless.

He's just said, no treatment available. It is a shame, always liked his character.

My mother suffered from dementia (alzheimer's) and my last memory of her before she died was visiting her and her asking me "who are you?".

Dementia is truly a horrible disease.

I feel so sorry for Ashley ( I know it's fiction). If ever I was diagnosed with dementia I think I would top myself.

I think that is what Ashley will contemplate. I would never let my child see me the way I saw my mother.

Re: Emmerdale

I've seen how dementia can affect a family, it's terrible. I became concerned when I noticed I had short term memory loss, it scared me! I went to see my doctor who arranged a memory test which I passed thank goodness.
She said it can occur for many reasons, in my case it was a combination of stress, physical pain which I've endured for years but more likely, grief after I lost my mum.

Re: Emmerdale

I have a feeling they will use this to allow him to understand and perhaps help his father to die possibly to then kill himself. Got a horrible feeling it will be a very distressing few months with this, a story worth telling but not necessarily one we want to see.

Re: Emmerdale

I agree about the next few months being distressing storylines, but I hope they're not too depressing though.
There will be people watching you have been diagnosed with this illness, so they will need to portray this carefully, and not distress them or make them give up hope.

I wondered if he wants to leave the programme and this is their way of writing him out?

Re: Emmerdale

Given that soaps like to highlight topical social concerns do you think he might go off to one of those euthanasia clinics in Europe?

It might not be as drawn out as some might fear.
