The Wisdom of my Grandad (in 5 parts)

My Gramps had crystallised in his diaries his thoughts on life, gathered during his 77-year sojourn on the planet Earth.
But what have I learned in my, so far, 70 years here.
Five things.
Number 1 today Monday

++++++++++++++++
To thine ownself be true

You can kid yourself for a time, sometimes a long time, but at the end of the day you will have to face facts
Get real.

Be yourself, honest and truthful

Tomorrow number 2. Number 5 on Friday

That was good advice Robert but how many can actually say they know themselves well enough to be able to be true to themselves. !.

How very true, Young Robert.
I was once told, that you need to love yourself before you can love others.
Any thoughts on that?

Thats so true Solo, I am reminded of Robert Burns

“O wad some Power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us!"

I wish I could say I have adopted Gramps rule of life into my own but I am not in the same league as him

He was indeed. He had a hard life, called up to the trenches, wounded then a P.O.W. then jobless & ill for the rest of his life.

In idle moments I wonder how my family would have evolved if he had died in the trenches.

Would I have had my spirit & soul implanted in some other body.

What about his daughter, my mother & the other folks who didn't come to exist in the other parallel universe.

Where are they?

Be true to your self To be true to yourself means to act in accordance with who you are and what you believe.
If you know and love yourself you will find it effortless to be true to yourself.

Just as you cannot love anyone else until you love yourself, you cannot be true to anyone else until you are true to yourself. Begin by not being afraid to be who you are!

this reminded me of a poem I love, I think I have posted it on the forum before but just in case I haven't, this is the poem,

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest
For he’s with you, clear to the end
And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

This is so true
