Transplants

I have just read this in today's paper:

"Patients preparing for a human head transplant will have virtual reality lessons on coping with a new body.

Prof. Sergio Canavero, of the Turin Advanced Neuro-modulation Group, plans the first transplant next year.

He says simulation will help paralysed people get used to being able to walk again with a donor body."

What do you feel about this? Is it a 'miracle' or a bit macabre, and a step too far?

Re: Transplants

It cannot happen. If they cannot yet repair damage to the spinal cord in the back, then how in the hell do you suppose they are going to connect a whole new brain to someone else's spinal cord in situ?

Someone's having a laugh..

Dunno Barry, but I just googled this man and found this:

Sergio Canavero (born 1964) is an Italian neurosurgeon and author who attracted media attention after stating, in early 2015, that he will be able to perform the first successful human head transplant by 2017.[1][2] Valery Spiridonov, a 30-year-old Russian with Werdnig–Hoffmann disease (type I spinal muscular atrophy) and rapidly declining health, has volunteered to offer his head for Canavero's studies

Re: Transplants

I'm a bit confused. Which part is transplanted, the head or the body?

Re: Transplants

I find it hard to believe but if they can do it then I'm not sure if I'm appalled or amazed, a bit of both I think.

I feel the same as you Julie.

Surely it can't work.

On the other hand, if we assume head transplants were successful years down the line, just think of the implications regarding people who suffer with gender identity disorders.

A boon for them perhaps?

Doesn't bear thinking about does it
