Brits to be allowed to opt in to EU citizenship

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a7465271.html

EU negotiators will offer British people the chance to individually opt-in and remain EU citizens as a proposal in Brexit negotiations, the European Parliament’s chief negotiator has confirmed.

The plan, first revealed in its early stages by The Independent last month, was being considered as a long-term aim by the European Parliament – but has now been fast-tracked to the negotiating table by Guy Verhofstadt, who is in charge of thrashing out a post-Brexit deal.

Mr Verhofstadt said the “very important” proposal had “captured the imagination and hopes” of many British people who wished to retain their rights as EU citizens and would be in his negotiating mandate.

The plan would see Brits offered individual “associate citizenship”, letting them keep free movement to live and work across the EU, as well as a vote in European Parliament elections.

The proposal could potentially give Brits who live and work across borders a workaround to the disruption caused by the Leave vote – and young people looking to flee an increasingly isolated UK greater choice over where to move to.

Depending on the approach taken by EU negotiators, the idea would likely be subject to approval by the British Government.

Mr Verhofstadt is drawing up a report with the European Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs about proposed long-term changes to the EU’s structure. The plan was originally proposed by Luxembourg MEP Charles Goerens for inclusion in the report, but will now bypass that process and be taken forward independently.

It appears Hungary will give anyone in the world eu citizenship already
Maybe it's something along these lines?

They have to do something for all those people who moved to warmer climes like Spain or the south of France. Apart from anything else what would be the effect on house prices if they were all suddenly forced to relocate back to Britain?

Well that certainly is thought provoking although it seems a bit difficult to put in effect , but given how divided the country is over Brexit and how isolated the young Brits would be compared to their E.U fellow students who travel freely all over Europe for free collage education and paid internships it does seem like a good idea to me and might release some of the tension and social unrest in the U.K

still trying to figure out what exactly it is ? if its some kind of eu passport/ travel document then even the staunchest brexiteer would obviously apply for one too as we are leaving the eu , not leaving Europe . with or without this citizenship thing we will still be able to travel in/out of Europe anyway just the same as anyone one else in the world can so what exactly is it ?

I don't understand it either? Whatever it is it's bound to cost us money, I think they are dreaming up schemes to ensure we keep supporting them financially.

Re: Brits to be allowed to opt in to EU citizenship

Having posted this last night in the Pay to Stay thread I am glad it has merited a place of its own.

Perhaps you are not aware of the large number of people who actually LIKE to be closely connected with the EU...those who live here, full or part time, those who travel frequently to work here. Those with family here. Those with business interests and who have European subsidiary companies.

The offer is made not for any financial gain to the EU...so cynical...but so that anyone who for whatever reason wants to retain ties to the EU, which gives them information and the ability to vote in most EU elections including local ones which can affect their property or business (just not national ones) can do it. and the issue of being able to study in the EU as Mei mentioned above.

It also means those who want to, do not have to be dragged away from their chosen lives by others who want something else.

As per usual, tax will be paid in whichever country you spend 6 months and a day (except for a few taxable incomes that have to be paid in the country of origin of the revenue given such as having worked in the UK civil service).

It also means that instead of perhaps having to apply for a visa to travel both ways, those in the EU can travel between EU countries without impediment...brilliant for those who work/study inside the EU. In addition I have been exploring a visit to the US next year and as a member of the EU, British citizens get a far easier entry than those outside it. When the UK is no longer a member that may well change since requirements according to citizenship will affect those who are no longer are EU citizens. This is also potentially true for UK citizens travelling elsewhere as a member of the EU.

Some might fond it odd that many many people in the UK actually have a lot to do with the rest of the world, either through family or work. I don't agree that some can make their lives more difficult.

Whether the UK makes a reciprocal offer for those EU citizens who work and live in the UK remains to be seen. Or is the UK so intent on controlled immigration that they will send thousands of EU citizens home?

Not forgetting of course that the UK is going to the EU with a begging bowl in terms of the Bigger Issues. It would be too silly to cause friction about this.

The citizenship offered by the EU is ...for the EU.

There is no such thing as a pan European citizenship. It is issued only for the members of the EU and it offers you a chance to vote in and be represented in the EU.

So do you think it would be completely free?
