its there simply because the terror threat on the streets today is greater than its ever been , the IRA back 'in the day' were a bunch of cowards who wanted to commit atrocities but also wanted to go home at night and evade capture so they planted bombs , indeed in the main they usually even gave a warning call to say so hence 'bomb scares'
this latest breed of radical crackpot however isn't scared of dying , indeed they want to die in the act ......the soldier beheaded in London ??? they didn't run away , they stayed awaiting police wanting to be shot in the act remember
think back to the shopping precinct in kenya ( actually was planned by a white English muslim convert ) and the systematic shootings by suicide bombers .........
we havnt the time during Christmas shopping for a team of gunmen to turn up at the local shopping centre and start shooting for us to phone Hereford and get an SAS team out of bed, race to the other end of the country and start shooting back like you see in the movies .....what you don't see is hundreds of radical hard core fighters returning from war in the middle east hell bent on doing damage here and we simply cant monitor them all 24/7 so it is presumed possible that sooner or later an incident may occur in a street near you and so the great british bobby with his truncheon and whistle may be a little 'out gunned' and by the time an armed response unit turned up the threat would have become simply a massacre ( it has different outcomes in the usa as chances are someone in the public would be carrying as well as the police so an armed crackpot would in all probability be taken out quickly) so in order to show the government is protecting us all ( a token effort) we now see armed police more and more although the realities are we havnt anywere near enough of them but at least the elite can be seen to be doing something hence the smiling policemen .........simply guys just doing their job and hoping they will never have to use the hardware they are packing

HiClumsy started a thread earlier about a known threat to Christmas Markets in Europe, hence the increased and visible presence of armed officers in the UK.
The threat was credible.

Looks quite normal to me we've had armed police around the mosques and the synagogue at various times since the brexit vote.Off topic I know but I like my dogs to be friendly to people in uniform it looked a little odd a big man with a gun holding a 5lb chihuahua but she liked him and he couldn't stop smiling at her. They are just human beings after all.
