Government act to gag press

Should we be concerned about this?

Re: Government act to gag press

Knew the 'nasty party's' mouthpiece would bleat over this and scream about freedom of the press, but arising from various court cases wherein said press had been found guilty of 'hacking' into private telephone calls and text messages something had to be done. The existing 'Press complaints Commission' is a toothless dragon. Now win or lose, the Press 'barons' will have to pay!!!

So you actually agree with the nazi Max Mosely, who is funding this new regulator to gag the press virtually single handedly, for no other reason than they caught him with his trousers down carrying out his depraved debauchery?

Well, there's a turnup...

Absolutely not, but I do suppport the Dowler family and others who have had their privacy intruded into by (inter alia) Rupert Murdoch's empire

And the perpetrators have been caught and punished, the main culprit paper has even been closed down so justice has been served. How on earth could gagging the rest of the free press, which can do so much good in a free society to delve into the corners of murky worlds, be a good thing other than to give the rich and powerful something else to hide behind. Let's remember that without a free press even such as the MP's expenses debacle would never have been uncovered!

For one such as yourself, who absolutely relishes pontificating on the indiscretions of the rich and powerful, the gagging of the press would virtually have the effect of gagging you too....

Yes, we should.

It doesn't matter if it was in the Mail or not, all the other outlets are carrying it, too.

It'll be a very sad state of affairs if this goes through ...

Re: Government act to gag press

If the government allow this to be implimented it will be poor decision. The unintended consequences are obvious to anyone with half a brain. I can't think of any other law which compels the defendant to pay the costs of their accusers if they are found not guilty. Freeloaders will be queueing up to make a case for the slightest little offensive remark.
The fact that it is backed by Max Mosley and his millions should be enough to put anyone off approving it.
