Re: ID to prevent electoral fraud

There is a lot of sphincter squeaking noises coming from Birmingham City Council and Tower Hamlets already.

I hear that there are all sorts of problems caused by people not having appropriate documentation, and I can understand that there must be many perfectly honest people who would experience such problems.

I have long been in favour of identification cards, not just for voting but to prove one's identity in many situations. Opponents to the idea claim that it is a breach of human rights, but I can see no real objection if you have nothing to hide. Even ex-criminals could obtain identification cards: their identity could easily be proven by the police or courts.

Yes it does. And it needn't be current. As long as you can be identified by the photo it fair game

Sounds the ideal solution to me.... I've never heard of them before.

Then that's the ideal answer.

I assume that those IDs were introduced when 'the troubles' were at their height. Logically, the same IDs should be introduced in the rest of the UK to counter the recent problems with illegal immigrants, especially with the likelihood of some of them being terrorists.

Funnily enough, no. Is only recently we have had to show photographic ID. Don't know if you have to in GB but we have to supply our NI number as well

NI numbers are occasionally required by some authorities when completing their forms. I have rarely needed to use mine yet, for some reason, it is imprinted in my memory!

I'm not sure that the advocates of this policy have really thought this through entirely. For instance how would they cope with those who, for various reasons have a 'postal vote' ???

Re: ID to prevent electoral fraud

Our ID is our driving licence, if you don't drive you can go to the local motor registry and get a non drivers licence. You still have to fulfil the 100 points of identity .

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/lice...hoto-card.html

Doesn't matter your religion, or ethnicity you can get it.

Not that they ask for ID at the polling booth they just ask your name and address to cross your name off on the registry, remember voting is compulsory.

Vote early, vote often
