We might not like it. Too bad.

"Our" English is not that of our grandparents.
(Read any letter or newspaper report from a century ago).

It might give us a warm, fuzzy glow to feel superior to our young in this matter.
But, "at the end of the day", change is inevitable.
A fair point.

Re: Spelling and grammar

As mentioned earlier, beginning a sentence with 'and' and 'but' is technically incorrect. Having said that, I do it too.

If anyone is worried about it, though, there are several alternatives which would suit the 'grammar police'. For example:

'And' = 'In addition'
'But' = 'However'

I agree. In general usage they don't.

But.... er....

However, if one is writing a formal text or professional paper, it is preferable to be as correct as possible, especially if one is trying to impress one's audience.

Indeed! Remember when Legal Secretaries had to type entire documents without mistakes and without using tippex.

True. We don't know how lucky we are these days, what with spell-checkers, grammar-checkers and computers where we don't have to print until we're sure everything's correct.

I know I couldn't do what the old-time secretaries used to do.

Re: Spelling and grammar

There are far worse things in heaven and on earth than incorrect spelling.
it is such a minor thing to get offended about.

Some of us are Dyslecsic, and do not have Spell Checkers.
Actually I love stories wrttten in the venacular, and full of spelling mistakes,

Maybe not on a friendly forum such as this one. However they should still apply on CVs, Job Applications and other formal documents.

Good spelling and grammar were things I looked for when short listing applicants. I even discarded any forms which were written in blue ink - they clearly stated only black ink was to be used as they had to be photocopied. Attention to detail is important.
