Depression

My friend is worried over her son who suffers from depression,as well as physical health conditions & is on a lot of medication from the Dr including anti depressives . He does not work, he often spends most of his day on his bed reading, refuses to go out , no friends to visit , Some times he hardly talks to his Mother, often 'snappy ' other times quite chatty . My friend worries & never knows what mood he is going to be in She wants to help him but doesnt know how to.Does anyone have experience in depression , how best to help ? She is not on the internet so I said Id ask for her

Re: Depression

I'm afraid I am no expert in this field although, to be honest, I have in the past felt a little depressed.

It sounds like his doctor has resorted to handing out pills in the hope that they will solve the problem whereas I would have thought a more effective strategy would be counselling. If someone is depressed, surely the first step is to find out the cause.

It has often been said that trying to cure the problem without knowing the cause is doomed to failure. In fact, I would have thought that the doctor would have suggested counselling before handing out pills like sweeties.

I agree he needs to be properly diagnosed to get the right treatment, so many variables involved and possible ways to go. Drugs can help finding the right combination may take time, but other therapies alongside could well aid.

Would the counsellor have to have been in a similar situation to offer advice, or is the resolution Classroom based?

I entirely agree JBR.
I am no 'expert', but I can tell you first hand what happened to me.

Years ago I went through an extremely difficult time and it got me down terribly.
EVentually I went to the docs because I couldn't just carry on as I was, I wanted to feel better again.
He went to write a prescription but I asked if I could try counselling first, I felt I needed someone to talk to more than anything else.
I eventually got an appontment with a lovely man, who listened patiently, helped my through the things that were piling up in my head, and even held me when I cried. Some might say that was unprofessional, but I was so grateful and that helped me far more than swallowing pills would have done. Just to be held, and feel another human cared was all it took eventually.

Having said that, I do think if people don't ask for help in time, then probably prescribed drugs will be inevitable.

I also think Deylon, that the young man in question needs to recognise he has a problem, and want to get better, but some men are not very good at talking unfortuantely.

I'm assuming that counsellors who specialise in depression would need to know everything about it, whether or not they themselves have been depressed.

I'm pretty sure that consultant oncologists know what they're talking about without the need for them to have suffered from cancer!

Exactly. Depression is not a physiological illness.

That maybe so, but do they know the person?....

I think that part of counselling involves getting to know the person.

Again, I'm no expert but I think that, logically, that would follow.
