We do have to wonder if these are people who really understand or only familiar with the text book and internet jargon. If we went by the internet, we'd all be committed.

Deylon, Have a look through this link. They seem to cover everything for the unwell person and those around them. Maybe your friend could ring them and ask them to send out all the information in the post.
From what I can make out, the appointments can take a long time in most cases. At least he has asked to see a psychiatrist, and that is half the battle to start with. Maybe MIND could help it along a little. I don't know though.
