Microwave cookers

Do microwave cookers lose their strength as they are used, we have 12 years and it takes longer to cook?

Re: Microwave cookers

I have a six year old Panasonic combination microwave oven We cooked some jacket potatoes the other week on the combination setting as we always do but they weren't quite done. I had to give them 5 minutes longer than usual.

I'll be interested in the answers to this question.

Re: Microwave cookers

An explanation I heard one day was we clean the inside of the microwave but can't and shouldn't attempt to clean the bit that creates the microwaves and it gets icky over time meaning the waves cannot get through so easily.

Not the technical way it was explained to me but how I remember it

Do Microwave Ovens Lose Power With Time?

http://www.ehow.com/info_12020972_mi...ower-time.html

A microwave oven's power diminishes over time because its magnetron tube weakens. A magnetron tube is a high-voltage system that uses magnetic and electrical fields to create the oscillating waves that bounce around the oven and heat food. It is the source of a microwave oven's energy and power. So as the magnetron tube becomes weaker and less effective, the microwave oven becomes less powerful.

The typical magnetron tube has an average life of 2,000 hours of operation. That means you should be able to cook and heat food in a typical microwave oven for 2,000 hours before then oven loses power. This may not seem like a lot of time until you think about how you use your microwave oven. If you are like most people, you probably use it for a few minutes or seconds at a time. If you used the microwave oven for a total of 15 minutes every day, it would take 22 years for it to reach the 2,000-hours-of-operation point.
Well, now we know ......

Have you accidentally put a metal object in your microwave?
Interesting and exciting firework display.

I would agree with that Omah
I had a Panasonic Microwave for 16 years and noticed it took longer to heat things over time.

I purchased a new one about a year ago (similar power) and certainly noticed the difference .

Oh the sparks do fly if you leave a spoon in the dish after stirring it.
