You are perfectly correct. It depends on the intonation and the circumstances.

I don't think that anyone here would use 'Jock', 'Taffy' or 'Mick' in an offensive way.

Go on. Call me a 'tyke' or assure me that Yorkies are 'broad in the back and thick in the head'! I dare ya!

Not that I am aware of, but I do recall Protestants calling Catholics Micks, when I was a child, so I assumed the term came from Ireland as most of the Catholics in my area originated from Ireland.

Re: Casual racism

An Australian called me a pom. I was absolutely OUTRAGED! Wrote a letter to The Telegraph and reported him to the police for hate crime.

They told me to **** off and stop wasting their time.

Which was fair enough I suppose. So I did.

Oddly enough 'Paddy' is considered affectionate - and 'Mick' derogatory!

You could always claim it was after this:-

Re: Casual racism

Well I'm proud to be from Yorkshire so being reminded with names like Yorky or Yorkshire Tyke doesn't bother me at all...I just feel a bit sorry for the rest of you this being God's own country and all that
