Was that not a forces acronym for 'wily oriental gentleman' ?
I think that was what my father said anyway!!

Perhaps it is better forgotten.

I thought that your posts had an air of class about them.

I quite agree. If people constantly seek offence they will perceive it to be everywhere. Sadly, the Professionally Offended are everywhere these days. My grandad was a Jock and proud of it. If people called me Limey, Sassenach or Pom I'd be proud of that as well, and why not.

Look! I've apologised once already. That's enough.

Re: Casual racism

I think it depends on whether they're friends of yours.

I've a Scottish friend I call Jimmy (as in: see you jimmy), a Jamaican friend I call Rasta, bump into him in the street and say Yo Rasta Man and touch knuckles.
etc.

But with someone you don't know, and you don't know how they like it, it's just too personal and yes can be rude.

That's exactly what I understood to be its origin, too.

Funny, though, how the words 'wily oriental gentleman' themselves have no obviously offensive content.

The word 'wily' (synonyms: shrewd, clever, sharp, sharp-witted, astute, canny, smart) is surely not offensive and, in fact, could even be seen as complimentary!

So interestingly, an apparently non-offensive (or even complimentary) phrase has become 'offensive' simply through the common use of its contraction in an intentionally offensive manner.

My dad used to say that word.
When I asked him what it meant he said "Western Oriental Gentleman."

Haven't heard it for donkeys years now.

And I was told "Wildly Oriental Gentleman".

I grew up with all these words, they were used as generalisations and when they were "banned" I thought the world of political correctness had gone mad.

But I can see that maybe they could be insulting, depending on context.

Just as an aside, when I was a kid I was told that WIMPEY (the blokes that used to drive vans and dug up the roads, not the burger place! ) was an acronym for....We Import More Paddys Every Year!
