It definitely wasn't a slug, it moved too fast, and I would have recognized a shrew because of the pointed nose.

I would have been thrilled if it was a harvest mouse but it was darker in colour and i think i would have seen it's tail. Plus they are not common in this area

My moggies regularly bring home live voles, and I have to catch them, but this one was very thin, so I think I will have to assume that it was an anorexic vole.

I have opened the cellar window in the hope that it can escape and climb up the 3 steps from the window,and get back into the garden before I close it again later this afternoon.

Most likely a Vole, if running & stretched out they can look long & thin.
