Wildlife Pond or Koi Pond.

Do you have one or more?..i put in two very small wildlife pond,i had two frogs move in within month's, i find you can just leave them and they look after themselves, apart from the string algae, that i fish out,i have started to use barley straw,to keep it at bay,

Koi for me,would be too difficult to look after,as i know nothing about them, but i love watching people who have them on youtube.

We used to have a pond in a house that we lived in about 13 years ago, it was mainly goldfish and they grew right big! I would love a pond in my garden here, I wonder how much it would cost, you've got me thinking I want one now.

Re: Wildlife Pond or Koi Pond.

I have a pond but only have goldfish. I used to have a few koi at my last address but found that they were not as hardy as the goldies. A proper koi pond requires specialist equipment and no plants whereas a goldfish or wildlife pond needs plants.

My pond is only just over a year old so it's still finding its balance. I put ten new fish in last year and found today that there are at least five babies which is great news.

Mine cost around £500 for hardwood sleepers, liner, pump, filter, cables & switches. Plus the cost of plants.

It could be done cheaper though as a fully sunken pond.

LionQueen,..i bought two preformed pond liner, they cost around £30 each,i put them in my self, one has shelving, the other,i found some large rock's in the garden, put those in,so that the frogs, hedgehogs, can find their way out, put gravel at the bottom, so the pond plants can take root,..in total about £50 each,..i am still waiting for the pond skaters to arrive, lol.

Longdogs, what a beautiful pond you have and garden, bit of a perfectionist i see,i love that water feature, it really compliments the pond,i too only put mine in last year, but already i have frogs, but no frogspawn, maybe next year i hope,do you know how long a pond takes,to find it's balance?...i've looked on line, with many different answers.

Wish I was confident enough to do my own. Not as costly as I thought but I wonder how much people charge to make one for you.

I suppose that would depend on the size tbh. The hardest part is digging out the soil and it's surprising how much soil you end up with. If you have a small wildlife pond, I would think a gardener or handy man would be able to do that for a reasonable price. If you start adding pumps and filters then obviously the cost would increase significantly.

Occasionally there are pond items on Freecycle or you could buy second hand on Ebay.

LionQueen, all you have to do is dig a hole, but,as Longdogs explained, a lot of dirt comes out,i was lucky,i put my dirt under stones,in my parking bay,the reason being, i opened up my garden,a few year's back,to make an extra car space,so now have two spaces,..it depends what you want really, mine isn't on the same scale as Longdogs, that pond is superior to mine,i just wanted a small wildlife pond,i dont have time to look after fish,as much as I'd love to!...believe it or not,a washing up bowl, sunk into the ground will attract wildlife, ..yes,i think a handyman would give youna reasonable price, I'm lucky to have one,he painted my porch and fitted a connector hose to my down pipe, for water butt and cleaned my windows, £50.
