I am trying to dissuade them.
If they are seriously thinking about a therapy dog they should go through proper channels who will vet them and discuss the needs of the dog as well as the child .This may help them decide if they are dedicated to having a dog or just want a therapy tool..In which case a dog isnt a good idea.

My grandson has grown up with the cat and the family dog who arrived before he was diagnosed.

He prefers the cat and heres the thing , we hear loads about therapy dogs but not about cats.. Yet the cat who is a bit of a mean old thing loves him...
He strokes her and is really gentle with her and she allows it whereas she can be quick to scratch anyone else.
She seeks him out and sits with him and it calms him down.

As for me. After yesterday Im convinced that Murphy would make a better grandparent than me. I really struggled with the constant noise and demands, up and down, running after them, trying to watch them, trying to make sure little man doesnt eat mud or poke something he shouldnt or fall into any water or puddles or climb or .... Well its never ending
As for communication I now have OH and his communication problems and little man and his, but its as if one speaks Chinese and the other one Russian there is just no mutual ground between them which means Im being the interpreter and UN peace keeper too..

As with OH's birthday party I think this is going to be a final stay over with the grandchildren. OH just cant manage it.

That's a sad decision to have to make cass but only you can know what's right for the family.

Something we did as my grandad got more confused was grandkids only visited for an hour or less, he seemed to be able to cope better with that length of time. We popped the side of the family that really affected, they came down from the north into a local hotel. That eased their journey to and fro.
