Floydy, I view a lot of threads but only post if I have an opinion on the topic. I even listen to some of the music, on your music thread, but I am not a huge music fan, so what can I post?
Have you ever thought that they view your thread because they want to know what it is all about, yet may have no comment to add, so just enjoy hearing the music ?
We are all different and enjoy discussion on different topics, so the only way to get many posting on a thread, is to do one on politics. We all have an opinion on that and many like a good argument!

I've had a thread going for the past five months which I finished today but I've found it sometimes strange that I see people viewing but not actually participating and I have frequently thought "why do I bother wasting my time doing this?"

But you're right - members post where they are interested. That's fine by me. I rarely visit the Politics thread because certain people in there bore the pants off me with their repetitiveness if I'm honest.
