Picture size question

When posting a picture on a forum I prefer to post a large picture as it takes you right into the scene. of course it all depends on the forum site and what it will allow.

This particular shot on another forum really takes you as if you were actually there.

I won't do a link as I don't think it is permitted.

So what are other members thoughts?

Re: Picture size question

Agree RS, as thumbnails are not helpful with detail. I just use Postimage.

Re: Picture size question

I agree too.

Using IrfanView I resize all my pictures to 640 pixels wide which is the regulation size for forums.

Re: Picture size question

I use "imgur" which allows up to a 21 inch monitor.

My thoughts are a photo if possible should place the viewer in exactly the same spot as the photo was taken. Unfortunately that can't be done on here.
That photo of the boat leaving the docks is way far better seen full size. The only way to get some idea is to increase to 150 percent. Or I can click on it instead, don't know if others can

Re: Picture size question

I often use 640 X 480 pixels but the camera I use now takes photos with with a wide aspect ratio (16:9). I usually scale these to a nominal 700 pixels wide. The height then turns out at 393 pixels proportionally. An odd figure but it doesn't really matter.

If a photo is shown full-size in a post, the forum scales it down to 675 pixels wide (according to Firefox image info.) This doesn't seem to affect anything though.

A throwback to when dial-up connections were the norm:
My images don't normally go above a couple of hundred kilobytes in file size. This comes from having to keep file sizes low so that images loaded fast in a web page. Maybe not so necessary these days in view of faster Internet connections but old habits die hard.
