We were actually taught something very similar many years ago at school. We were told that lack of oxygen to the brain caused us to yawn, yawning being the way the body reacted to get the oxygen back to the brain.
Either lack of oxygen to the brain or in the males case it's often caused by ones ' other half' as a controlled reaction , this is usually accompanied by eyes 'glazing over' and and acute hearing loss
