From my memories of bedsits and house-shares, no, I wouldn't want to go back there. Unless I have to go into one of those tiny retirement flats.

My Amercian friend Eve lives in what she calls "A Gated Community" It's small one bedroom bungalow type homes for over 55s and no kids. They live their own lives but share the Gym and Pool. They also have a Common Room type building that is used for functions ect or just to go and chat if you want company. There's a couple of Caretakers live there and some sort of Gate Person. That doesn't sound too bad but not what's being suggested on this thread..

They have them here too but of course very expensive.

But people really do live with their mums and dad's for years. I know one chap who is 43 and does this - he's not really doing anything to help his situation though.

Oh yes, some never move away, and for many families it used to be normal. Up to them if it suits them.
