Re: Advice

Your friends should contact the Kennel Club and ask them for a list of recommended breeders. If they can get on line the KC hold such a list and also the breeders with available puppies. Tell your friend to make sure they establish that the puppies parents have had the recommended health tests for the breed and that they see the mother with the puppies (and if possible the father). Never buy a puppy unless they see the home it was born in.

Re: Advice

If found a puppy see if it has had a vet check and comes with limited time insurance. The puppy should have at least the first vaccination before the sale and the second later on with the new owner. The puppy should also be old enough to leave at around 10 weeks give or take a couple

Don't change the diet either straight away, a dogs stomach can't cope, especially a puppies, so try and get a supply from the breeder for a few days worth until getting own supply

As for finding one, when we first wanted an Afghan hound we went to a lot of dog shows and asked owners more about the breed. This actually led us to a fantastic breeder back in 1972/3 and what is more we are still in touch with her

Re: Advice

Ignore the Kc as some of their credited breeders are not far short of puppy farmers, no checks are made, you pay to get on the list

Contact the secretary of the breed club, they are the ones in the know. They are the ones who know who is breeding good stock, and who to avoid

be prepared to be "interviewed" on the phone before they give names and telephone numbers of breeders

A good breeder wants the best possible home for their pups so it can take a while to find the one you want

do not be tempted by buying online or via the small ads. A good responsible breeder will have a wait list for pups, not just trying to offload asap

Re: Advice

Missy gives sound advice. Best option is to go to the breed club, Some of these breeders will also be on the KC list.

However, the KC is still a good option IMO. The breeders on the KC recommended breeders list are checked. There are regular inspections to their premises. It is true that breeders pay for registration, but before they are accepted onto the list their premises and conditions are inspected (hence the fee). They do not get onto the list unless they get satisfactory clearance from the inspectors and this inspection is required to be repeated regularly. Nothing is perfect but it is better than nothing.

We bought our golden retriever this way and we could not have found a better breeder. If I had not trusted her I would not have bought a pup from her and vice versa - if she hadn't liked us we would not have been allowed to take one of her pups. She was not a "production" breeder of goldens or any other breed, but her puppies were very well reared. In fact, primarily she bred and trained trotting horses. The conditions of her establishment overall were second to none.

Best thing your friend can do is go with her gut feelings and walk away if not certain about the breeder. Don't buy out of sentimentality or because you feel you have to buy.

Re: Advice

Sound advice from these members, Deylon.

Here are the breed clubs to approach if it helps:

The only thing I do not agree with is too early vaccination, but that is my personal choice only.
