I wouldn't think they would serve the same dips to other customers, but you never know.
I am definitely doing that in future!

Mind you, they do say that tipping left-overs back into the pot improves the flavour.

Re: Indian restaurant etiquette

I would use a small spoon to ladle the dip onto the poppadom.

Re: Indian restaurant etiquette

Been ages since I went to an Indian, but I think I take a poppadum and put some dip on my plate.
Otherwise it's like slurping other people's saliva isn't it?

Same reason I don't eat peanuts from a bar. You don't know where peoples hands have been do you?

I remember going to a hotel bar where they had olives and pistachios - hard to resist.

Re: Indian restaurant etiquette

I have always spooned onto a plate. But I do think it's likely that in some restaurants they probably top up. I'm not sure whether this would be a hygiene issue unless people are putting in spoons and then putting the spoons in their mouth (who does this?). If you spoon directly from the pot then you put the stuff in the spoon on a poppadom don't you? Where's the saliva contamination?

If people break a bit off and dip it into the dip.

Re: Indian restaurant etiquette

I break off chunks of popadoms onto my plate and spoon dips onto them.
