Wholesome Dog Treat Recipes

I make this one a lot. All mine love these.

It is by the 'Lily's Kitchen' lady, and all her recipes are designed to be easy, healthy and low fat.

First one: Cheesy Breakfast Bars.

200g (7 oz) rolled oats

2 tbs honey

50g (2 oz) grated Cheddar

3 tbs sunflower oil

25g (1 oz) fresh Rosemary or Parsley, finely chopped

1 beaten egg

Method

Preheat oven to 180 (gas 4) and lightly grease a baking tin.

Put all the ingredients together into a large saucepan and stir over a low heat fora couple of minutes. Then tip onto the baking tray. (Sometimes I need to add a little water).

Smooth and firm down the mixture firmly using the back of a wooden spoon.
(At this stage I mark it into whatever size squares I need).

Bake in oven for 20 mins until golden brown.

Once completely cool remove from tin.

This recipe is so simple and is delicious.

It will store in an airtight container container in the fridge for 10 days.

(Remember there are no preservatives, so I make them little and often).

I'll post the Fish Treats another day, they are even simpler than this one, and really tasty.

Let me know how it goes please Cass.

They smell delicious when they are cooking.

Hope Murphy likes them, bet he will.

I'll do the fish one now for you, it's really quick and easy.

Re: Wholesome Dog Treat Recipes

These will go down really well if your dog likes fish.
I personally use Buckwheat flour for these. It is a gluten-free grain and said to help cleanse the intestines.
(I have also used Spelt flour).

Here goes:

Fishy Treats

1 x 200 g tin of either Salmon or Tuna in oil

1 x beaten egg (large)

100 g (4 oz) flour (preferably Buckwheat)

Method

Heat oven to 180 C (Gas 4) and lightly grease a baking sheet.

Empty the fish and it's oil into a bowl and flake with a fork.
Add the beaten egg and stir well to combine.

Add the flour to the mixture and mix together until you have a lumpy dough.
You can either roll this out and cut shapes with your pastry cutters ( make them about 1/4" thick), or you can pick up small pieces of dough and roll them into little balls.

Place the shapes on a baking tray. (If I've had made balls, I flatten them with the back of a floured spoon at this stage, but it's just choice).

Bake in the oven for 20 mins. (I turn mine over half way).

These are delicious and so simple with only 3 ingredients.

They will keep in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Don't keep them longer as they have no chemical preservatives remember.

I'll perhaps do the peanut butter one another day, but make really sure you read the label first and don't buy any with E967 (Xylitol) sweeteners in it. Harmful to dogs.

Re: Wholesome Dog Treat Recipes

Anyone has gluten free ones I'd be interested.

I make a basic biscuit recipe using gluten free flour then add whatever I think they will like, makerell, cheese, peanut butter, tuna green beans. Or a scone recipe with carrot instead of sultanas.

I use a dehydrator too and dry meat and vegetables and fruit for them.

You can do that in a low oven don't need the dehydrator really but I found one cheap so snapped it up for drying flowers.

Julie, the Fish Treats above are made with Buckwheat flour, and that is gluten free.

It is only flour, fish and an egg, nothing nasty whatsoever.

My dog doesn't like fish, never has done. She loves cheese so I will try the first recipe for the cheesy breakfast bars.

Re: Wholesome Dog Treat Recipes

I made the cheese ones this afternoon OH and I tried them first , not bad
and Murphy seemed to enjoy it too..

As for the xylitol, nasty stuff I avoid artificial sweeteners in everything I buy but Murphy isn't keen on peanut butter anyway..

I will dig out my book and share the banana and the honey ones later

Glad Murphy likes them Cass. Did you use Rosemary or Parsley? I prefer the Rosemary myself, smells lovely cooking.

When you get chance, the banana & honey sounds interesting.

Re: Wholesome Dog Treat Recipes

Mups, would the first recipe be alright for my 7 month old Yorkie? I rather like the idea of making them.
