Re: Solo holidays

I'm not brave enough I'm afraid, but would like to be.

Good luck Leeby, whatever you decide.
Have you come to a decision yet?

Oh, my GOSH...this is a dream of mine, just me (perhaps my son) and my surfboard, Victoria to Queensland, while I can still manage it....

Thank you in advance for the blog and insights. Off to read the rest of it now...

Jazzi, your independence is inspiring. So fun to travel this country solo, hope you found good people along the way.

Ruthio, you have mentioned two places - Scotland and Italy that are on my short list of solo adventures. I want to soak in Italy at my own leisure and doubt anyone would want to linger in the places in which I am most interested...

Re: Solo holidays

I have been on quite a few solo holidays. I never had a holiday during my married life, and flew for the first time when I was in my fifties. My first ever solo holiday was, to all places, China, well over twenty years ago. I saw it advertised in the Mail, ten days full board and travel for about four hundred pounds. I wanted to visit a communist country and could foresee China opening up to the West, so wanted to experience it before that happened. A fascinating, educational experience.

Following that, I went solo to Kenya, Vietnam and Malaysia. Although these were group type holidays, most of the time I took the opportunity to go off on my own whenever possible, and did not socialise with group members in the evenings.

I just loved the experiences of them all.

Re: Solo holidays

See? Many more of us capable of travelling the world alone! It is empowering and gives so much freedom. Yes, I have found some great people to talk to. I also don't socialise, as sitting in a bar say, all evening, is not my thing. But I would talk to anyone and sit with them at meal times, no problem.

But once out of the hotel/coach/accommodation/ship...whatever...I'm off, enjoying the sights. I've stopped going on the day trips offered by Shearings, as I get fed up with the driver/courier, especially if used the company as a pick up and not gone by train. Hours spent listening them jawing over the mic, or trying to crack funny jokes, or using the word 'actually' in every sentence starts to grate!

Re: Solo holidays

I have a cyber friend on another forum who found a travel companion via this site.

https://www.thelmandlouise.com/en-gb/

I know some people really do want to travel on their own but others may not have anybody to go with. This was how it was with my forum friend.

She said it worked out very well. The holiday was in Brazil where she had always wanted to go but just wasn't confident enough to go alone.

Re: Solo holidays

One of my cousins (aged 60+) went camping on her own in Australia this year. But she did know people there to visit.

Not something I could do, carrying all necessary camping gear.
