We have a local group here on the Wight. Do you have anything active in your area ?

Re: Dark Skies

We don't have a dark skies group here in Florida, Dobra, but we do have a community-wide effort to install low lighting because of sea turtle nesting. Hatchlings too often mistake coastal lighting for the moon and head inland instead of to the sea. It's taken a massive effort just establish the practice. A wonderful side benefit is that it has indeed made celestial view much better.

Re: Dark Skies

In the midst of winter without a moon, Newchurch village here in the IoW is illuminated by a galaxy of stars, but in reality inky black. When walking out of the brightly village hall, one feels dizzy from lack of direction.

From where I live in Ryde, the night views of Portsmouth and Southsea are a blaze of light,

Re: Dark Skies

The view atop Mauna Kea. That's the Milky way running vertically through the photo. There are so many more stars visible up there that it takes a keen eye to pick out: Perseus near the top right, Orion small and near the bottom, Gemini low and to the left, and Taurus towards the center.
