Re: Vice chancellors £500k salary

I wouldn't mind if it were Oxford or Cambridge, but Bath is a third rate university. How can the Vice Chancellor possibly justify that sort of money?

And as for this:

"The proportion of students leaving university with top honours has reached record levels in the last five years, sparking fresh debate over the current degree classification system.

"Last year, more than 104,000 students - or one in four - graduated with a top degree classification, a five-fold increase on the number graduating with a First in 1999."

When I was at university, it was less than 6% who gained a first, not 25%. This is just "dumbing down".

To me, this rings of selling good degrees for money. Up the grades to attract more takers for your university and make more money.

Can't stand sycophantic fawning.
Footballers probaby work harder than vice chancellors
and definitely work harder than the royals .
Most weren't born with a golden spoon firmly clenched between their teeth courtesy of a lottery of birth .

Really? Under whose classification? The Grauniad, perhaps?

Bath is one of the old polys elevated to 'university' status.

And if so, why isn't it one of the 24 Russell Group?

Hi

Nope, don't use the Grauniad, just checked and they have it ranked as Nimber 6.

Bath was became a University over 50 years ago.

So did all the other polys!

So if it is so highly rated, shouldn't it be in the Russell Group?

According to this ranking site:

https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/bath-spa/

Bath Spa University ranks 103rd, yet

76% of graduates achieve a first or upper second class honours degree.
Sounds like they're giving away degrees for good attendance .....

Apparently not:

In 1946 Bath Teacher Training College was opened on the Newton Park campus, as part of the post-war initiatives to fill wartime teaching shortages. It was a women's college offering two year courses, under the Principal Mary Dawson. The present institution was formed in 1975 as Bath College of Higher Education by the merger of Bath Teacher Training College and Bath College of Domestic Science. In 1983 Bath Academy of Art also merged into the college.

In 1992, the college was granted degree-awarding powers and in 1997 adopted the name Bath Spa University College. In March 2005 the institution was granted university status, becoming Bath Spa University in August 2005.
