Unusual Sights

A murmuration (never heard that before!) of starlings above the the small village of Rigg, near Gretna, in the Scottish Borders.

Two little blue dragonflies by Colin Hutton - amazing insect photography if anyone wants to see more of his amazing photography with insects.

Aww, some of them didn't show up - never mind, those two are cute

Re: Unusual Sights

We get murmerations of starlings over the Somerset Levels and I used to see them over Temple Meads Station in Bristol on my way home from work, reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock "The Birds", beautiful but a bit creepy!
One year there were several birds falling out of the sky onto a village near Wells, never found out why.

I've never seen a swarm like that in flight. The two dragonflies look like something out of Disney!

It's a shame the others wouldn't appear, I found some really good ones too!

Re: Unusual Sights

I used to live in Leeds and we had the flock of Starlings like that. There were thousands of them and we lived near the countryside. After their lovely display they used to fly off to roost in the trees and buildings in the Leeds City centre.
Were the birds falling out of the sky in Autumn time? If so, it could have been the rotting fruit on trees they had eaten. It makes them drunk and they just collapse from it or fly into buildings and kill themselves. Poor things.

Wow great photos. I'm lucky enough to have seen the Gretna starlings myself on numerous occasions. Its an incredible sight and the noise from all those wings flapping is amazing too! They also fly over my village across the Solway to Gretna every evening from October to end March

Re: Unusual Sights

You are both very luck to have seen it Bowie and marpaul. There was one clip that wouldn't post that was of a chap who was videoing hundreds and hundreds of geese that had landed on a football field and they suddenly, all at once, took flight - heading straight for him! From the sounds coming out of his mouth and into the recording device, he didn't seem that impressed with flight in unison

Re: Unusual Sights

There's a wonderful U-Tube vid of Bill Oddie and a 'murmuration' of starlings - sorry, can't seem to post the link.

I've seen it once in Norfolk and it's mesmerising - a real 'mesmerising murmuration !
