I firmly believe 'no vote no voice'.

But compulsory? No. This would infringe upon a person's rights as a free citizen.

Re: Should voting be made compulsory?

I have been in two minds about this up to now, but I now believe that voting should not be compulsory.

For one thing, if someone really doesn't want to vote for some personal reason, obliging him to visit the polling station and complete a voting form could result in him spoiling his paper to show his objection.

On the other hand, if the reluctant voter is just lazy and can't be bothered, perhaps it's best to leave him be. If he has no serious convictions, why should his vote count? Leave it to those who have serious opinions.

If it was compulsory how would you enforce it? It would be a nightmare trying to get every registered voter to the polls I would think.

Why would it be a nightmare? Australia does it.

The nightmare is political parties roaming the streets snatching old ladies and driving them to the polling place.

I've been here since 2006 and we are on our fifth PM.Compulsory voting certainly doesn't encourage political stability.

Re: Should voting be made compulsory?

Why do people not vote?
Is it because a lot of Brits are too lazy to get off their arses?
Or
Are they totally off the idea because their vote is pointless anyway?

I do have a postal vote because I am too lazy and I won't vote anyway because it is pointless. Nothing changes.
