Re: Ideas please

Photographers tend to try and show their photos are better than anyone elses. Nothing wrong in that until the " put downs" start . I have seen some terrible criticisms of what I would consider decent photos, and from a pal of mine who used to go to his local camera club it happened there as well.

Jealousy is a terrible thing and it is rife in the photographic world

How do you judge what a good photo is? very easy. If your happy with it then great, what others say doesn't matter two hoots, if others like it consider it a bonus.

Very true.
Equipment snobbery is another thing!

Every college course I've done has had one of those "expert" types who spends a lot of time chatting to the tutor about technical stuff while the rest of us are learning sod all.

The best thing about photography is you start to notice things around you that you would have passed by.

There is snobbery in everything, photography, Art, Wine and even coffee. If it gives pleasure to just one person, then it's done it's job.

Re: Ideas please

i have often been stopped by people with small compact cameras etc and asked about what I use and how did I learn.

The simple reply is if someone wants to get to use a DSLR camera of any make I say start it in fully auto mode at the beginning, get used to what the camera can do on its own. Then take each step individually by first of all using one of the settings be it shutter -aperture etc and get used to them and finally full manual mode.

What frightens people off is looking at a camera seeing all the settings and thinking I could never master all that so they don't bother.

The replies I get generally is "I never thought of doing that"

Like every thing one has to take things step by step

AsTessa says you start seeing against just looking and that is the difference.

Take something simple like a flower, most would say "that is a nice flower" and leave it at that. Looking at it with a photographers eyes you start noticed the surroundings- how the light hits it- the shape of the bloom- the height it stands- what is the best angle to see it- contrast of colours etc etc
