If it's a mains-operated type with battery back-up, after you've replaced the battery you will need to press the `test` button - this not only tests the unit but also resets it. After you've done that, the unit will be quiet for around ten minutes then `bleep` to let you know it's back online.

In an ideal world yes. Don't know the regulations in Scotland but here in England, all house built after 1992 had to have mains operated alarms installed as a legal requirement.

Houses built prior to this can have ordinary battery operated types installed unless that house is to be let out as a HMO.
