Unless the weather is inclement I don't expect visitors to remove their shoes... If someone begins to remove their shoes and it's a nice day...I'll tell them not to bother.
I never ask anyone to remove their shoes and have never been asked to remove mine when visiting anyone,it seems very rude to do so ,unless there is a medical problem
My family always remove their shoes as I do. Visitors normally do but I don't ask. Work men usually wear those plastic overshoes, if they don't I will ask them to remove their boots. It's rude to trample your way over carpets in dirty boots.
Curious.....I see a lot of you have mentioned carpeting. Here in Canada many homes are just laminates, hardwood and ceramics. Might be bedroom carpet only.
