Sonic Booms

How would you like to live with this?

Mount Tavurvur volcano has erupted in PNG sprewing dust and ash into the atmosphere.

People living nearby have to put up with the dust and ash plus the sonic booms the volcano emits. Quite frightening I would imagine.

This is a radio interview with the owner of a local hotel telling the reporter about the booms when one occurs. I hope it works in your part of the world because it is worth listening to, fascinating piece of reporting, it is only a minute long.

I think the last time was about 20 years ago when it destroyed Raboul city. One of my sons was there for few weeks a few years ago with his ship looking for unexploded ordinance left over from WWII (they ended up finding a jap sub as well), I remember he said they had rebuilt the city further away from the volcano, though, of course, it was dormant then however the lava fields were still there.

Re: Sonic Booms

Not heard a sonic boom since I was a kid-say 50 years ago,but rumour has it we had one not so very long ago. Two jets were scrambled to intercept a plane not responding, they were not super sonic when they passed over but they were moving fast

Ooo, that take's me back. I spent some time in Rabaul in 1990 after working for a while elsewhere in PNG. Scary stuff!
