thanks AJ - and I suddenly realized that this is of course one of my regrets not being able to be there - I think I was 20 000 miles away. I do hate the thought of anyone dying alone

I came here to ask that question - did you 'regret'....
I wish I had known my grandmother better as I had such respect for her. Now I live in a place surrounded by older folks, some very lonely, I give my time to those now...
Sometimes I just dont feel up to that - but I 'can' spare the time, so I do....

yes it's so easy to 'neglect' the elderly in this fast paced world - we need to stop and smell the roses with our senior citizens - well not the grumpy ones! [or perhaps especially the grumpy ones]

That made me think of my mother smiling and saying hello every single time she passed one of the other residents at the long-term care home where she lives. The old fellow would sit in his wheelchair looking very grumpy. Mom was determined to get him to smile back. He never did, but he began giving a slight nod and lifting a hand in acknowledgment when she spoke. He has since passed away. I wonder what he thought of her efforts.

Re: Mindbender's Poems

there are those are become grumpy because of their circumstances and those who are grumpy before their circumstances - it's easy to tell the difference once you engage in conversation but one is harder to shift than the other!

Re: Mindbender's Poems

Frozen Trees

The trees reached out to touch me
As I walked their frozen path
As I recoiled they blew their leaves
Whispering 'in spring you will be back'

they stood as frozen sentinels
turned their leaves from gold to white
they dared me to come closer
they could turn my heart to ice

the winter winds weren't gentle
they howled and screetched and tore
At limbs and leaves and frozen roots
their song a banshee roar

I had felt their strength and closeness
as I lay against their trunks
in the cool of summer evenings
my hands in roots had sunk

they had shared their breezes with me
sung me ocean songs Celt lore
but they warned me 'when the sap starts chilling'
you'll hear our songs no more
