Raw eggs.

During my childhood we had a family tradition when we were all together the Belgian and English side of the family to have a big celebratory meal.
The sweet we used to have was a pudding "cooked" overnight in the fridge. It was then turned out of the bowl and covered in lots of fresh whipped cream and cherries.

I haven't made this for a while but have been invited to a BBQ the first weekend in May and as my contribution to the meal I was going to make this pudding.

The problem is that part of the recipe calls for raw eggs and I'm not sure whether it's ok these days for people to eat things containing raw eggs.

I would really like to make this pudding but I also don't want to become known in history as the Market Harborough Poisoner of 2018

What do you think, safe or not?

Re: Raw eggs.

Could you buy your eggs from somewhere 'salmonella free'?

The pudding sounds interesting - could you share the recipe?

I will only eat an egg if it is cooked and solid, not runny.

Re: Raw eggs.

Raw eggs do not concern me. I have never had a bad reaction to eggs in any form.

When I was a child, (and indeed for my own children), if we had a touch of gastroenteritis and had not eaten solid food, the remedy was always a raw egg, whipped up in milk with a teaspoon of sugar. My children always asked for it when they were ill.

Re: Raw eggs.

MC raw eggs in the national flock were declared safe to eat not long ago.

If you buy good quality British eggs with a long sell-by date they should be ok . Also keep the pudding in the fridge as long as possible.

I use raw egg in mayonnaise and mousse.
To err on the side of caution I would not feed them to small babies or anyone with a compromised immune system.

The eggs with the red lion mark are supposed to be safe to eat raw.

They are produced using high standards with hens vaccinated against salmonella.

Re: Raw eggs.

Nothing wrong with raw eggs now that Egwina has retired. I also used to have a couple of raw eggs in milk when I was young and doing weight training.
