Politicians

Anyone know exactly what qualifications are needed to become an MP? I'm serious actually. Do they have to be qualified in anything in particular?

No rude answers either

Re: Politicians

I don' think any formal qualifications are needed, you just have to be put up, either by yourself or a political party, and then get elected.

Re: Politicians

Exactly as Alan says this is why when they become cabinet ministers with responsibilities for education etc I usually end up cringing as what exactly have they ever done to tell others how to learn and teach !

Don't confuse academic qualifications with common sense and the ability to get things done. Some of the smartest people I have met didn't have 2 'O' levels to rub together. I've also met plenty of people with qualifications coming 'out their ears' who couldn't tie their own shoe laces.

Re: Politicians

Whilst true I do think they should have some idea what they are doing when they put forward their pet theories on education and health etc. I have many theories and ideas that I truly believe would be better for the country but that doesn't make me qualified to run an education department or the health service !

Re: Politicians

Think they should be at least 35 years old and had some sort of job before they can stand for election.

I would vote for that and I would like to see them have to be elected and work in local government for at least 10 years before being elected as an MP too.
